K.J. Wright opened his press conference Thursday with a tongue-in-cheek introduction.
“My name is K.J. Wright from Olive Branch, Mississippi,” Wright said. “This is my eighth year here. I graduated from Mississippi State and I am glad to be back. Very glad.”

K.J. Wright had arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday, 13 days before the Seahawks open the season at Denver. Coach Pete Carroll says the “most optimistic” estimate on when the Pro Bowl linebacker can return is two weeks. So rookie Shaquem Griffin is preparing to start in his first NFL game.
Maybe it wasn’t a specific enough timeline to confirm that Seahawks veteran linebacker K.J. Wright will for sure miss the regular season opener at Denver.
But when asked for an update on Wright’s condition Wednesday, Seattle coach Pete Carroll hinted that Wright won’t be ready for that game and that rookie Shaquem Griffin would start against the Broncos.
Earl Thomas’ way is to hold out of training camp while angling for a renegotiation or trade. Wright’s way has been to be front and center when training camp began, eager to assert the leadership that comes with being an eighth-year vet.
KJ Wright is entering his eighth year with the Seattle Seahawks. He’s one of the few faces left from the historical Seahawks defense that set the NFL on fire a few years back. Wright is also entering into the fourth and final year on his $27 million contract.
